Most of us begin collecting early records for the comedy and novelty. As our interest matures, we discover that even the acoustic era was capable of producing some
wonderful musical forms. A perfect example of this is the Haydn Quartet. The harmonizing chorus of their songs is music in itself,
and any added orchestra would only be redundant. Even today, the barbershop quartet is a popular singing style still practiced by many groups in the United States.
We consider the Haydn Quartet to be the definition of barbershop style. May the continued survival of their music be an inspiration to those who wish to enjoy or perform this nearly forgotten art.
Pronounced "hay´-den",various artists recorded under the name, 'Haydn Quartet', before 1904. The members listed above represent the group which recorded from 1904, and later.
Titles performed by them include some of the greatest popular songs and hymns of the 1800's. These are all sung faithfully to the original intentions of the music, and are never revised or modernized for
the ears of a younger audience. Most of the Haydn's members were also excellent soloists, most notably Harry MacDonough and S. H. Dudley. The Haydn Quartet also performed on vaudeville and minstrel show records,
before 1910. This page lists some of their best songs and hymns. Look for their minstrel performances in the 'Minstrel' page.
