The "Black and White" Minstrel show was a popular form of entertainment which began in the United States during the 19th Century when slavery was still legal. Performers would dress in costumes and apply exaggerated black and white makeup, to portray themselves as different types of stereotypical African American characters. They sang and spoke in dielect. Typically, the performers would be seated in a chorus with the main characters seated in front. The host, or "Mr. Interlocutor", would remain standing and would introduce and direct the performance. Jokes would be exchanged between the host and different characters of the group.
The popularity of Minstrel show faded rapidly after the beginning of the 1900's and many records of this time already refer to these as 'Old Time' minstrels. Obviously, the racist themes in this style of entertainment is quite unacceptable by today's values. Please be sure to read Meloware's policy on this type of material in the FAQ page.
Many elements from the minstrels did survive into vaudeville and later into film. Fans of the 'Three Stooges' comedies may be suprised to discover many of the same jokes being acted out by Moe, Larry, and Curley. The minstrel show music and songs were written by many of the best composers of the time, and despite the racism still contain many interesting subjects and musical themes.
Meloware is offering two categories of Mp3 Minstrel performances. The first is the early recorded examples, including the "Evening with the Minstrels" series, recorded by the Haydn Quartet around 1905. The second group is from the "Victor Minstrel Company", which included the voices of studio regulars like Arthur Collins, Byron G. Harlan, Billy Murray, Henry Burr, Albert Campbell, Frank C. Stanley and others. This second series seems to have been recorded between 1907-1912. Although these titles were sold for a number of years after they were recorded, very few new records were made after this time.
